Townsend Straight Quart Tankard
This handsome tankard was made by the Quaker preacher/pewterer, John Townsend of London for export to the colonies between the years 1748 and 1801. During this period many more tulip shaped tankards were exported to the colonies than the earlier old fashioned straight sided form. This type by Townsend is less common than his tulip shaped tankards. This impressive piece stands 7 3/4" tall and is in very good original condition. The hallmarks on the side are worn, however, the touchmark inside is quite good.
