Offered is a good Boardman beaker with a mug type ball terminal handle and bearing the mark of Boardman & Hart, New York, c 1825 - 1835. This beaker is 3 7/8" tall with a top dia. of 2 7/8" and a bottom dia. of 2 3/4".
The Boardmans are well known for their hundreds of pewter forms and many innovative or progressive, for the era. Trend setters if you will. This hard to find form of attractive and desirable beaker is a perfect example. Of the thousands of 3 inch range flared top beakers being produced and sold at the time, some handled, most not, some marked, most not, many not even attributable, the Boardmans elevated the common product with this attractive beaker with a raised and tooled base and raised band around the body, reminiscent of pint and quart mug designs, added features raising the quality and desirability of the product. At this time, c 1825, very few if any other pewterers went to this effort. There are much latter beakers by other pewterers with a base and handle leaning towards a "cup" from but not this early. At the time, it could have been unique to the Boardmans. This form is also found without a handle. See Connecticut Pewter and Pewterers by Thomas, page 143.
This beaker is in very good structural condition, with no damage, dents or subsequent repair. It does have a few small nicks from honest use and a few areas of light surface etching, mostly on the inside and outside bottom. SOLD
