for sale with old, dark patina is this very fine example of pewter by john townsend and thomas compton, london 1784-1801. townsend, a quaker preacher, had close ties to the colonies and spent time preaching in america as a traveling visitor. he was highly respected and made pewter of the highest caliber. the tankard is of quart capacity. the inside has john townsend’s ‘lamb and dove’ touchmark. the side is marked with T & C hallmarks. it stands 7 3/4” tall, has a 4 7/8” base diameter and 4 1/8” top diameter. it has beautiful turnings on the base and lid. it is in very good condition.
